Summer 2021 J-WEL Workshop: “Remotely” Designing for Learning: From Principles to Practice, June 15 - June 24

This workshop series introduces evidence-based practices for the design and implementation of learning experiences in person and remotely. You will apply practical strategies and tools to create a student-centered curriculum grounded in instructional design principles. The workshop will introduce findings from the learning sciences, where you will have the opportunity to reflect on teaching practices and discuss with moderators and peers.


You will be offered opportunities to engage in hands-on activities to create prototypes of digital or face-to-face lesson content. Several guest speakers will introduce examples of best practices employed at MIT in different disciplines. Throughout the workshop you will engage in discussions around how you might  transform a course or part of a course that you are teaching based on what you learn in the workshop. 

The workshop will leverage an online format to encourage interaction with peers, MIT faculty, and staff.

  • Non-Members*: $4,000 USD
    *Please note: Non-members will need to complete a brief application form to be accepted to the workshop.

Workshop Outcomes:

By the end of this workshop, you will be able to...

  • Apply key learning science principles to design of instruction. 
  • Integrate active-learning activities into lesson design.  
  • Create or select quality assessments for online or in the classroom.
  • Design inclusive learning experiences.

  3. Creating better assessments.
  4. Applying learning science to instruction.
  5. Remote laboratories.
  6. Reimagining your teaching in a remote or hybrid setting.
 
Time commitment:
3-4 hours/day for 6 days

  • Workshop: June 15 - June 24, 2021 (Tues, Wed and Thurs each week)
    • 8:00-11:00 a.m. EDT each day

Certification: A certificate of participation will be granted for those attending 5 days of sessions and completing the associated activities.

Who should attend:
  • Higher education faculty, lecturer or instructors currently teaching or preparing to teach in the near future.
  • Learning and Instructional Designers from higher education.
  • Staff in Teaching and Learning Centers working with faculty on course design.
