Dr. Claudia Urrea, Associate Director of J-WEL pK-12, awarded EAFIT Alumni Who Inspire Award

Claudia Urrea

If you’ve attended a J-WEL Week, you’ve likely met Dr. Claudia Urrea, our Associate Director for pK-12. If you’ve met Urrea or heard her speak, you’ve probably noticed how passionate she is about helping children access educational opportunities that allow them to engage with their natural curiosity and love for learning. What you may not know about Claudia is that her love for science began as a young girl in Colombia, coming in first place at her school science fairs and doing engineering projects with her dad for fun. As a teenager, she was determined to learn everything she could about the impending technological changes facing our society, so it was a natural step for her to decide to study systems engineering.

After graduating from Universidad EAFIT with a B.S. in Computer Engineering, she moved to the United States to pursue a PhD at MIT. While at MIT, she found that it was possible to connect all of her previous life and education experience to help shape the world’s next generation of scientists—starting with kids in pre-kindergarten.

Urrea was recently honored by her alma mater with the EAFIT Alumni Who Inspire award, in the EAFIT abroad category. She traveled to Colombia to accept the award and was surprised with video messages from her friends and family before her speech! You can watch her acceptance speech and footage from the ceremony here (in Spanish).

You can also find out more about the award here or watch a video of her family and friends speak about her work below.

Congratulations from the J-WEL team!
