J-WEL Higher Education Member Profile: Ahmadu Bello University Zaria (ABU)

The Ahmadu Bello University Zaria (ABU) is a public research university with a current student population of over 50,000 (25% postgraduate). ABU has over 120 academic departments running several disciplines at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. ABU is acclaimed as the most diverse and largest university in Sub-Saharan Africa.
ABU is planning to carry out projects with MIT J-WEL input in curriculum design and high-impact research. Already, teams participated in the Curriculum & Course Design and High-Impact Research Workshops. ABU has also created a list of MITx courses to circulate campus-wide so that interested members of the university community can apply to take a course of their choice using J-WEL’s complimentary certificates.

Working closely with J-WEL, ABU's team in the African Center of Excellence for Neglected Tropical Diseases and Forensic Biotechnology has redesigned Biosafety and Bioethics, Agricultural Biotechnology, and Plant Breeding courses and have come up with a curriculum of a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) program in Forensic Biotechnology. A new curriculum for the MSc in Forensic Science is almost completed and is scheduled to commence during the next academic session.
