J-WEL pK-12 shares STEAM Camp curricular modules at no cost and under an open license

At J-WEL, we aim to develop globally applicable resources out of the work we do with our member organizations. For our pK-12 Collaborative, one aspect of this commitment is the free and open release of our STEAM Camp modules.

Each year, our pK-12 team works with member organizations to build their capacity to teach STEAM subjects via hands-on, problem-based active learning approaches in our STEAM Camp model. To support this activity, we fund the development of curricular modules that incorporate these approaches in a wide variety of themes drawn from the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

We localize these modules for use in our work with members, but we also release them at no cost and using an open license to encourage others around the world to download, modify, and use the curricula for their own not-for-profit educational purposes. Each module is released under the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 license. Our collection, downloadable from GitHub, currently includes 18 modules in 3 thematic areas (water, climate action, and energy), and we are adding more each year.

Here are a few example modules:

Internet of Things for Healthy Plants - The goal of this module is to introduce young learners to the potential of App Inventor at MIT, a block-based programming language, as a means of fostering their digital empowerment while growing their understanding of plant health and different forms of energy.

Ocean Acidification - Students explored Hong Kong’s aquatic microbiome in a hands-on, experimental, and creative manner using foundational biology techniques.

Animal Aerodynamics - How can nature influence the way we design aircraft? In this module, students will explore the creation of aircraft inspired by animals. Participants will learn about various types of biomimicry techniques employed by engineers and then devise models of their own using paper and other crafting materials to see how they fly. Additionally, students will build an apparatus to test their designs and gain further understanding about aerodynamics and the ways that we can continue to improve the efficiency of air travel.
