Speaker Bios

Portia Wu

Portia Wu

Managing Director of U.S. Public Policy
Microsoft

Portia Wu is Managing Director of U.S. Public Policy for Microsoft, where she oversees a team tackling federal policy issues critical to the technology industry, including Artificial Intelligence, cloud computing, workforce, and emerging technologies. She first joined Microsoft as Director of Workforce Policy and continues to focus on federal policy regarding workforce, skills, and the future of work. 

Wu has extensive experience developing and implementing policy solutions at the federal level. She previously served as Assistant Secretary of the Employment and Training Administration at the U.S. Department of Labor, where she oversaw billions of dollars in federal workforce and training investments; prior to that she served as Special Assistant to the President for Labor and Workforce Policy in the Obama Administration. 

 

Philipp Schmidt

J. Philipp Schmidt

Director of Learning Innovation
MIT Media Lab

Philipp Schmidt is Director of Learning Innovation at the MIT Media Lab, where he leads the ML Learning initiative, teaches courses, and conducts research on learning communities. He is also a cofounder and board member of Peer 2 Peer University (P2PU), a non-profit organization that provides access to online higher education through public libraries. Philipp served on the founding board of the OpenCourseWare Consortium, co-authored the Cape Town Open Education Declaration, and is an advisor to a number of non-profit and for-profit education projects. He has received Shuttleworth and Ashoka fellowships, and came to MIT as a Media Lab Director's fellow.

 

Richard Rowe

Dr. Richard Rowe

Dr. Richard Rowe is Chairman and CEO of the Open Learning Exchange, Inc. (OLE). He received his B.A. in Psychology from UCLA, an M.A. in Psychology of Religion from Boston University and his Ph.D. from Columbia University in Clinical Psychology. A clinical licensed Psychologist in Massachusetts, he has served as Associate Dean of the Harvard University Graduate School of Education, as Director of Harvard’s interfaculty Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology and Public Practice, and as Chair of the Harvard Center for Studies in Education and Development.
