MIT and J-WEL to Share in Grant to Create a Statewide Workforce Training Program for Advanced Manufacturing

Students and instructor gather in a laboratoryIn collaboration with the MIT Office of Open Learning (OL), the Commonwealth of Massachusetts has secured a $3.2 million grant to develop a training program for advanced manufacturing technicians. This pilot effort, entitled MassBridge, will serve as a national model for today’s workforce needs. MassBridge will help educational institutions develop curriculums that will better prepare students for this growing sector. We are excited to have J-WEL’s Principal Research Scientist George Westerman involved in the MassBridge effort.

MassBridge aligns with the J-WEL Workforce Learning Collaborative’s mission to facilitate programs and use research-driven tools to improve job readiness for underserved segments of the workforce. Additionally, MIT OL’s overall expertise in digital education and learning science will aid MassBridge in skills roadmapping and curriculum benchmarking.

“We see our mission as educating not only our students, but also outside MIT,” says Professor Sanjay Sarma, vice president of OL. “Combining the expertise of MIT, the Commonwealth, and our community college collaborators can make a real difference in the lives of people who do not yet have the skills for well-paying and fulfilling careers.”
