Reminder: Fall 2018 Call for Proposals in Higher Education Innovation

MIT student panel

On September 27, Higher Education @ J-WEL announced its Fall 2018 call for J-WEL Grants in Higher Education Innovation. We would like to remind the MIT community that proposals are due in less than two weeks! Please submit your proposals by or on Friday, November 9, 2018.

We invite proposals from MIT faculty that promote innovations in education. Each project proposed should benefit MIT residential learners and could include freshmen innovations, those for upper-level classes, and those relevant to graduate education. Applications should also consider the potential impact of a project on global learners. Any subject topic is welcome, and we are interested in creative ideas. Faculty across the MIT Schools of Science, Engineering, Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, Architecture and Planning, and Management are encouraged to apply.

Proposals could include:

  • A new or significantly revised subject
  • Learning modules
  • Innovative in-class, homework or exam assessments
  • Novel methods of pedagogy
  • Hands-on projects
  • Incorporation of entrepreneurship
  • Learning through research

To explore the suitability of your proposal topic, please contact jwel-he-grant-program AT mit dot edu

The proposal form, budget template, and related resources are available on the Fall 2018 call for J-WEL Grants in Higher Education Innovation page.

Some previously funded projects include:

  • Associate Professor Azra Akšamija, Department of Architecture, Culturally Sensitive Design: Art and Innovation in the Refugee Camp
  • Professor Christoph Paus, Department of Physics, Fundamentals of Experimentation in the Physics Sciences using an Arduino
  • Professor Christine Ortiz, Department of Materials Science and Engineering: Advancing Socially-Directed STEM Education

Faculty proposing educational innovations to the d’Arbeloff Fund for Excellence in Education or the Alumni Class Funds may find this J-WEL opportunity relevant. Please note that the Fall 2018 MITx Grant Program has recently been announced. J-WEL Grants in Higher Education Innovation may be complementary to MITx grants but any proposal for a course on the edX platform should be directed to the MITx Grant Program.

We look forward to receiving your proposals. Learn more.
