Future of Student Experiences - how to use the companion cards.

Changing demands, external forces, and a diverse student body require universities to re-think student support services and how we can create intentional positive experiences on our campus. It may require new initiatives to be developed and delivered, it may involve existing ones to be adjusted or enhanced.

What is meant by Student Experiences?

The student experience can encompass the different levels of engagement before students even set foot on campus, while they are on campus, and how they engage with the community and/or in co-curricular activities. Another aspect is the academic side from curriculum design and personalized learning opportunities to academic services and career preparation.

A student’s experience is also greatly impacted by the support mechanisms they encounter from mental health support to financial support as well as faculty and staff dedication.

And lastly, universities may need to take a more strategic view on how to augment and develop meaningful student experiences across departments, allocating resources and potentially fostering collaborative efforts of many entities on campus impacting communication and culture.

Why Cards?

At the MIT Jameel World Education Lab we developed a template, called the Future of Student Experience Cards for two reasons:

  • Surfacing the great work our member organizations already do.
  • Sharing these insights with other members for inspiration and to connect with each other for collaboration.

The cards are intended to capture selected initiatives member organizations have already implemented to support and enhance the student experience on their campus. Short questions provide an overview ranging from:

  • What is the initiative?
  • Why does it matter?
  • How does it work?
  • What has changed since the initiative was implemented?
  • Where can I find more information?

Other member organizations seeking inspiration in general or guidance for particular aspects of the student experience may find these cards useful and therefore an opportunity to reach out to the authors of the cards. It would be wonderful, if these cards can be a catalyst to start a dialog, brainstorm together, or dive deeper into each university’s experience navigating new or existing initiatives.

Get Engaged!

Our hope is that we will grow a sharable collection for the entire J-WEL community and would like to encourage you to share what you have been implementing to create even stronger student experiences.
